William Boyce was born in Norfolk in 1857 and moved to South Shields, County Durham with his parents in 1872. His father was a master mariner and ship-owner, but William's first career was as a joinery apprentice, working later in a draper’s shop, before eventually becoming an artist, specializing in maritime subjects depicted in various climatic conditions often off East Anglia and various other coastal towns.
He lived and worked predominantly in the North East where he exhibited in venues locally becoming well established and successful in his own area. Other examples of his work can be seen at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, South Shields Public Library and Museum and The Sunderland Art Gallery.
