Thomas Swift Hutton lived and worked in Glasgow, Wavertree Liverpool, Seacombe and Hoylake in Cheshire. He had a distinct talent for depicting seascapes and harbour scenes with a fine eye for detail and a very careful and sensitive use of tone and colour creating a sense of vast space and distance in his work.

He exhibited mostly between 1887 and 1906. Two works at The Royal Academy in London, two in The Dudley Gallery, one at The Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, five at The Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, one at The Manchester City Art Gallery and four at The Royal Scottish Academy.
