John Faulkner was born in Dublin. He studied art at The Royal Dublin Society. He exhibited at many venues between 1880 and 1890, as a landscape and coastal painter. He became a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1861, later resigning from this in 1870.

He exhibited four works at The Royal Academy in London, two at The Royal Society of British Artists, four at The Royal Hibernian Academy, one at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, five at The Royal Scottish Academy, three at The Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, two at The Manchester City Art Gallery and one at The Grosvenor Gallery.
