FRANK MAY (Exhibited 1882 - 1895)

ARTIST: Frank May (Exhibited 1882 -1895)
TITLE: “Lifeboats Rowing Out to Rescue”
MEDIUM: Oil on mahogany panels 8” x 12”
Signed F May lower left.
REF: KFA571 (One of a pair) (SOLD)

Frank May was a Birmingham artist who exhibited six works at The Birmingham Royal society of Artists and one at The Walker Art Gallery Liverpool.

These are two very fine little paintings, which sadly, depict a terrifying subject of great distress in raging, stormy seas.
But they are nonetheless beautiful in their facture, composition and rich, subtle colours and nicely presented in very pretty pierced and swept, gilded frames.

These images are almost certainly scenes from somewhere off the coast of Britain. The rock formations might be clues to their locations, as these would not have changed much in the last 100 or so years.
