ROWLAND HILDER (Attributed) Watercolour (SOLD)
“Under the Downs, Sussex”
Location is everything! This is absolutely rural Sussex, quite a long time ago. The Downs loom gently behind in the distance, a winter’s day casts shadows on ochre ground before us and we see nicely drawn barns behind naked beech and ash trees and a Sussex peg-tiled cottage. Oh, Yes!... A church too, with a broach spire! How Sussex is that? If only someone knew where this scene actually exists! The realistic style and fine draughtsmanship here suggest early Rowland Hilder, but alas, it is unsigned, hence the attribution.
