“Cottage and Chickens at Runswick Bay”
“Runswick Bay, September 1899” is inscribed on the back of this evocative little picture. Whoever painted this was very familiar with his medium and almost certainly professionally trained. This is bouncing with rural charm, a delightful, well-drawn study of a thatched Cornish cottage with an old front gate, on a hill with chickens scratching around in front. Yes, we’ve all been there, seen the real thing and it hasn’t changed a bit in the last 110 years!
