Fred Cuming studied art at Sidcup Art School and The Royal College of Art. He became an associate member of The Royal Academy in 1969 and was elected a full Royal Academician in 1974.
He became primarily a painter of romantic landscapes and soon developed his own inimitable style, both essentially modern and minimal. His finished pictures might at first seem to have been swiftly executed, but actually, they demonstrate the need for consistently sensitive handling and careful consideration and restraint, before deciding on the placing of delicate marks to suggest three-dimensional forms and shapes, adhering to strict avoidance of the defining of any distracting detail. The result ultimately combines to create an irresistible harmony of delightful tones and colours, always instantly recognizable as a Cuming.
His is a huge success story born of a unique talent, dedication and diligence. His paintings have hung in numerous one-man shows and combined exhibitions and a large body of his work, hangs in private collections throughout the world. He has a home and studio in Iden near Rye in East Sussex.
